A majority of business houses, lack the knowledge that sitting and working
on an improperly designed chair, most definitely leads to a unhealthy workforce burdened
with back pain. An improperly designed chair will not encourage an `S curve, which
is the natural shape of the spine. In fact you will find that an improperly designed chair
makes you assume a `C curve posture which is a distortion of the natural `S
curve. |

|
| Frequency of complaints in work environment : |
| A survey conducted among male and female office
staff reveal that the frequency of back complaints and the use made of the backrest show a
clear need for adequate backrest design. |
Improper seating can cause a host of problems to your spine. The
incorrect `C curve that you acquire in a bad chair puts extreme pressure on the
disc. This in turn causes the nutritive fluid to be expelled and makes the spine dry and
stiff, leading to severe pain when flexed back into the original position. Prolonged
sitting in this incorrect posture can cause the discs to swell and this presses against
the nerve causing severe pain. |
A
badly designed chair without a proper back rest will force the spine to keep the upper
body erect without support and this will lead to muscle and ligament strain. This weakens
the tissue over a period of time and hence your back will not be able to perform the task
it was formerly capable of doing. |
A
plush chair with a very soft seat forces the spine to assume a slumping position. This
then exerts pressure on the discs leading to back pain. |
Designer furniture manufacturers seemed to be filled
with flights of fancy to produce chairs that look good but are not functional. As a result
you now even buy sacks filled with polystyrene granules to sit on. |
Chairs that one buys because friends recommend it
may not be the right chair. What suits others may not suit you. |
| Hence both at work and at home, we should install
chairs that suit our individual needs and gives us good postural support. |
